cbd-oil-definition-and-effects-on-anxiety

Today, more and more people are using CBD oil as an alternative treatment for anxiety. Not familiar with it yet? Here, we will explore what CBD is, its benefits, and how you can use CBD to treat anxiety. At HempWellness CBD, a reliable source of CBD Oil products in Glenview, Illinois, we want you to have all of the information that you need to confidently use CBD oil.

What is CBD?
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of at least 113 active cannabinoids found in cannabis. Other cannabinoids include THC (tetrahydrocannabinol); however, unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive and it doesn’t produce that “high”. Due to this, it makes CBD an appealing option for patients who are looking for relief from pain, inflammation, anxiety, and other conditions.

CBD and Anxiety
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, anxiety disorders affect around 40 million adults (18% in the US) aged 18 years old and above. In response, numerous drugs have been developed (i.e. Prozac, Valium, Xanax, etc.) to treat anxiety. While these drugs are effective for most patients, some don’t respond well to them. Some patients can’t tolerate the side effects and some don’t experience that much improvement. Due to this, alternative treatments such as CBD oils have been developed.

Many studies suggest that CBD is a potential treatment alternative for anxiety. When administered correctly, it appears to be well-tolerated, safe, and effective in treating various anxiety-related disorders such as Panic Disorder, Social Phobia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Another example is a 2011 study which showed how CBD reduced social anxiety, particularly the stress associated with public speaking.

How It Works
CBD interacts with the body’s natural endocannabinoid system (ECS) which helps regulate most of our body’s function such as mood, sleep, memory, pain perception, and appetite. CBD also interacts with the neurotransmitter, GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA is responsible for transmitting messages from one neuron, or brain cell, to another. Essentially, GABA tells the body when it’s time to slow down. Since CBD is a GABA uptake inhibitor, it creates a surplus of GABA in the brain which can help calm the nervous system, help with sleep, relax the muscles, and reduce anxiety.

These are just some of the most important facts that you should know about CBD oil. To ensure that this is a suitable treatment option for your anxiety, please consult your doctor.
