Anxiety and CBD: Research-Based Facts You Should Know
We all get anxious from time to time. Before doing something new or talking in front of a crowd, we might feel nervous, uncertain, and unprepared. Some of those feelings may manifest in physical symptoms like clammy hands, palpitations, or shortness of breath.
However, for people who have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, anxiety is so much more than feeling nervous – it can be totally debilitating. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (AADA), approximately 40 million (18.1%) adults in the U.S. aged 18 years old and above are diagnosed with anxiety and anxiety-related disorders every year. In response, researchers and pharmacists have developed numerous medications to treat anxiety, such as serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), beta blockers, and tranquilizers – just to name a few.
But non-pharmaceutical solutions, such as CBD Oil products are also becoming more popular. In fact, several studies show that CBD does help reduce anxiety. Here are some of them:
- CBD and Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder
A small double-blind study conducted by Brazilian researchers tested the relationship between CBD and Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder. Results show that participants who consumed CBD were able to experience a decrease in their anxiety. The researchers validated their findings by performing brain scans. These scans revealed cerebral blood flow patterns associated with anti-anxiety effects.
- CBD and Social Phobia
In another study, researchers tested individuals suffering from social anxiety disorder. These individuals were asked to perform a stimulated public speaking test. Participants who consumed CBD reported significantly less anxiety and discomfort in their speech performance. On the other hand, the placebo group experienced higher discomfort, cognitive impairment, and anxiety.
While present research indicates that CBD has the potential to play a significant role in the treatment of anxiety and anxiety-related disorders, ongoing research into the use of CBD for anxiety is still ongoing. While CBD for anxiety sounds promising, you shouldn’t immediately purchase CBD and toss your prescription medications away. Make sure to consult your physician first.
